A lot of companies are missing out on opportunities to upgrade employees at no additional cost. One example is earning miles twice for the same flight!
I have been doing luxury traveling for fun but companies and employees can double dip with the following tips. Who doesn’t want to relax in the on-board lounge at 33,000 feet?
I know every company has a different policy for travel. Some companies allow employees to travel Business Class for flights longer than 6 hours other companies apply a strict “economy only” rule. And others might use individual rules, for example based on the employee level in the company. But what follows works for most companies independent of the internal rules.
Earning miles twice for the same flight?
Did you know that as a company you can earn miles on top of the miles that your employees earn? A lot of airlines offer a business account on which you can earn extra miles. And it’s not at the cost of the employee who is flying! Both the company and the employee can earn miles for the same flight.
Emirates has Business Rewards, Etihad has BuisinessConnect and many other airlines have similar programs.
Even if a travel agent is booking your flights!
It’s important to note that even if you have a travel agency booking the flights for you that you can ask them to use your business account number and still earn miles.

Time to redeem awards and upgrade employees
You see where this is going. Employees still earn their miles and the company can redeem the company miles for Economy/Business/First class flights or upgrades. So you can let your employees fly in style from time to time and this does not even cost you a thing.

Another great way to earn extra miles is staying at specific hotel chains. Staying at Starwoods /Marriott hotels will earn you SPG points as the 2 chains are linked now. Those SPG points can then be transferred 1:1 to a lot of airline partners. And if these points are redeemed in a smart way you can score insane deals. I am talking First Class flights worth $17,000 here.
Or what about Accord hotel points which can be transferred to Etihad guest miles for example. The list goes on, the possibilities are endless.
Earn even more miles with the right credit cards
Traveling without a credit card these days is almost impossible. So deciding which card(s) to get is very important. Your employees can benefit a lot from using the right credit card for their daily expenses. A lot of cards come with a sign up bonus and for every dollar spent you will earn extra points or miles.
One interesting scenario is this. Let’s say your employees have to book hotels themselves and later expense it. If your employees have a SPG credit card then they will earn extra SPG points for every dollar spent + receive SPG points for the stay. A lot of cards offer a complimentary higher SPG level so your employee will automatically get free room upgrades if available.

Free lounge access in airports
Another great benefit of the right credit cards is that you get complimentary lounge access in most airports! Saves your company airport restaurant expenses and the employee can relax before the flight.
Now I have to say that not all lounges are created equally but in Dubai for example I have access to a business class lounge with a la carte dining.
It all comes down to free benefits
Just by opening a business account, companies can reward employees who have to travel a lot without extra costs for the company. And if employees who travel a lot get the right credit cards they can score free upgrades in hotels and and use the points or miles for free hotel nights or fly in style to relax.
